Nine Days to Fix Your FAFSA for This School Year. On September 12 the Number Freezes.

Corrections to the 2025-26 FAFSA close September 12 at 11:59 p.m. Central. The Education Department's own notice says a submission rejected on deadline day cannot be reprocessed. Fix it this weekend, not on the 12th.

If you are in school right now on 2025-26 federal aid and anything on your FAFSA is wrong, you have until September 12 to change it. After that, the Education Department stops taking corrections and whatever sits on file becomes the final answer for the whole year.

Nine days. That is the window.

The Department published this calendar last December, in the deadline notice nobody reads. The FAFSA itself closed June 30. Corrections, changes of mailing address, changes of school, and requests for a duplicate FAFSA Submission Summary all close September 12, 2026.

The part in the footnote

The electronic cutoff is 11:59 p.m. Central Time, and the transmission has to be completed and accepted before midnight. The notice is blunt about it. Transmissions that start before 12:00 midnight “but are not completed until after 12:00 midnight” do not meet the deadline.

Then it gets worse. Submit on deadline day, get rejected, and you are finished. In the Department’s own words, a transmission submitted on or just prior to the deadline “that is rejected may not be reprocessed because the deadline will have passed by the time the user gets the information notifying them of the rejection.”

Translation: you find out you failed after you are out of time.

Filing on September 12 is not filing. It is a coin flip with no second toss.

What rides on it

The Student Aid Index, which is the number that sets your aid. A wrong income figure, a wrong family size, or a school you are no longer attending, and every award built on top of it is wrong too.

The maximum Pell Grant for 2025-26 is $7,395. The minimum is $740. That is a $6,655 spread sitting on top of numbers you can still change this week and cannot change next week. Real money.

There is a second clock running behind the first. Your school has to receive the corrected record by your last day of enrollment or September 19, whichever comes first. Correct on the 12th and you are leaving your financial aid office seven days to process it in the busiest month of its year.

Do this tonight

Log in at fafsa.gov, open your FAFSA Submission Summary, and read the income, the family size, and the school list against reality. Ten minutes.

If something is wrong, submit the correction this weekend. Not on the 12th. Early enough that a rejection is still something you can fix.

If your school flagged you for verification, send those documents now too. They are due 120 days after your last enrollment date or September 19, whichever is earlier, and your school is allowed to set an earlier date than that. Call and ask what theirs is. Do not assume you have until the 19th.

If everything on the form is right, you do not need to do anything. Close the tab and go do something else.

And if the aid still will not cover the bill, price the gap in the student loan calculator before you sign for it, then see what is actually out there on the education hub and our best education picks. Borrowing the shortfall is a decision worth making on purpose.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last day to correct my 2025-26 FAFSA?

September 12, 2026. That covers electronic corrections at fafsa.gov, corrections filed through your school's FAFSA Partner Portal, paper corrections on a FAFSA Submission Summary, changes of mailing or email address, changes of institution, and requests for a duplicate FAFSA Submission Summary. The electronic cutoff is 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

What happens if my correction gets rejected on September 12?

You lose it. The Education Department's deadline notice states that a transmission submitted on or just prior to the deadline date that is rejected may not be reprocessed, because the deadline will have passed by the time you are notified of the rejection. Submit days early so a rejection is still fixable.

Does starting the submission before midnight count?

No. The notice says transmissions must be completed and accepted before 12:00 midnight. If a transmission starts before midnight but does not finish until after, it does not meet the deadline.

Is there a second deadline after September 12?

Yes. Your school must receive your ISIR or FAFSA Submission Summary by your last date of enrollment for 2025-26 or September 19, 2026, whichever is earlier. Verification documents are due 120 days after your last enrollment date or September 19, whichever is earlier, and your school may set an earlier date of its own.
