Questions, answered

Do no-minimum accounts pay lower rates?

Not anymore. Several of the highest rates on the market come with no minimum at all. Balance tiers still exist at some banks, but the accounts on this page pay their full advertised APY from the first dollar.

What is the catch with a $0 minimum account?

Usually there is none. Check two things anyway: whether the advertised rate requires a linked checking account or direct deposit, and whether a dormancy fee applies to inactive accounts. The accounts we rank here avoid both traps.

How much should I keep in savings to start?

Start with anything, even $25 a paycheck. The standard target is an emergency fund covering three to six months of essential expenses, but the habit matters more than the starting number. That is exactly why no-minimum accounts are worth ranking.
